Frequently Asked Questions
Common Questions About Therapy and Getting Started
I have had negative experiences with counseling in the past. Why should I try again?
Many people I work with have had disappointing or unhelpful experiences in therapy.
Two of the most important factors in effective therapy are feeling safe and understood, and working at the level where patterns actually formed — not just managing symptoms.
If something about my work resonates with you, that is often a meaningful indicator of fit.
The right therapy can feel very different from what you may have experienced before.
Do I need to know exactly what I want to work on?
No.
Many people come to therapy feeling unsure, disconnected, or unable to fully put words to what is not working.
Part of the process is making sense of that together.
What if I don’t have time for therapy?
It can be difficult to prioritize time for yourself, especially if you are used to focusing on others or managing a lot.
At the same time, creating space to understand yourself and shift long-standing patterns is one of the most impactful investments you can make.
This work is not about adding more to your plate.
It is about changing what has been weighing on you.
What if therapy feels too expensive?
It’s true that therapy involves a financial commitment.
This work is designed for people who are ready for something deeper than surface-level change — especially if previous therapy hasn’t fully shifted what’s been keeping you stuck.
Rather than focusing only on managing symptoms, we’re working toward meaningful, lasting shifts in how you experience yourself, your relationships, and your day-to-day life.
Many clients choose to adjust session frequency in a way that balances their goals and financial needs.
You may also be able to use an HSA/FSA card or receive partial reimbursement through out-of-network insurance benefits.

My childhood wasn’t “that bad.” Is therapy still appropriate?
Yes.
Many of my clients did not experience obvious trauma, but grew up feeling emotionally unsupported, unseen, or overly responsible.
Emotional neglect and relational trauma are often defined by what was missing, not just what happened.
If something in your experience did not feel supported or resolved, that matters.
Is this therapy focused on coping skills or deeper work?
Coping tools can be helpful, but they are not the primary focus of my work.
This work is oriented toward understanding how patterns developed and helping them shift at a deeper level.
The goal is not just to manage what you are feeling, but to change how those patterns show up in a more lasting way.
I function well on the outside. Does that mean therapy is not for me?
Not at all.
Many of the people I work with are capable, insightful, and outwardly successful.
Therapy often becomes relevant when functioning comes at the cost of exhaustion, resentment, or disconnection from yourself.
What are your qualifications?
I hold a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Western Michigan University and am licensed as an LPC in Michigan and an LPCC in Ohio.
I am EMDRIA-trained in EMDR therapy, a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, and a National Certified Counselor.
In addition to my clinical training, I bring lived experience to this work, including navigating major life transitions and working through many of the same patterns my clients are facing.
How will I know if this is the right fit?
Fit is an important part of effective therapy.
If you feel a sense of alignment or recognition in my work, that is often a good starting point.
A consultation offers a chance to get a sense of how I work and whether my approach feels supportive.
There is no pressure to decide immediately.
What happens during a consultation?
Consultations are virtual and typically last up to 30 minutes.
We will talk through what has been going on, my approach, scheduling, and any questions you may have.
If it feels like a good fit, we can talk about next steps.
Is there a long wait for an appointment?
I prioritize responsiveness and ease of access.
You can expect timely communication and a straightforward scheduling process.
I offer a client portal where you can schedule or manage appointments, access billing information, and download documents at any time.
You will always communicate directly with me, which allows for a more personalized and streamlined experience.
Who can you work with?
I provide virtual therapy for adults who are physically located in Michigan or Ohio.
You do not need to be certain to start.
If you are considering this work, a consultation is simply a place to explore what feels right for you.
